When you're wearing a beautiful piece of gold-plated jewellery — whether it’s your go-to chain, bracelet, or those dainty earrings you never take off — it’s natural to wonder:

“Can I shower with this on?”
Let’s break down the facts so you can wear your Maya pieces confidently, without the guesswork.

🚿 So, Can You Shower with Gold-Plated Jewellery?

Short answer: It’s not recommended.
Long answer: It depends on the quality of the plating and how often you're doing it.

Here’s the full truth:

💧 What Happens When You Shower with Gold-Plated Jewellery?

When gold-plated jewellery is exposed to water, especially hot water with soap, shampoo, or body wash, it starts to break down the gold layer over time. Here’s how:

Element in Showering Effect on Gold Plating
Water Causes gradual fading
Soap/Shampoo Contains chemicals that weaken the gold layer
Steam/Heat Opens pores of the metal, making it more reactive
Hard Water (Chlorine, Minerals) Speeds up tarnishing

🛡️ What Makes Maya Jewellery Different?

We use Ion Plating (IP) with approximately 0.01g of real 18K gold per piece, applied over 316L or 304 stainless steel — a strong, water-resistant base.

This gives Maya jewellery:

  • Better resistance to moisture and chemicals

  • Longer-lasting shine

  • Stronger bond between gold and base metal

  • Sweat-resistant for daily wear

So while an accidental splash or quick rinse won't destroy your piece, prolonged exposure to water still reduces its life — even with our premium plating.

✅ How to Protect Your Gold-Plated Jewellery (Dos & Don’ts)

🚫 DON’T:

  • Don’t shower, swim, or sauna with your jewellery.

  • Don’t apply perfume, body lotion, or deodorant directly on it.

  • Don’t use harsh cleaning agents or wipes.

✅ DO:

  • Remove your pieces before bathing or exercising.

  • Store in a dry, airtight pouch when not in use.

  • Wipe gently with a soft cloth after wearing.

💡 Bonus Tip: Your skin’s natural oils and sweat can affect plating over time, so cleaning your jewellery once a week helps keep it glowing longer.
